Box braids are one of the most popular protective styles in Nigeria and across the African diaspora. They are versatile, durable, low maintenance between appointments, and suitable for almost every hair type. If you have never had box braids before or are thinking about doing your first install, this guide covers everything you need to know from start to finish. What they are, how to choose the right hair, how to prepare, what happens during installation, how to care for them, and how to take them down without damaging your natural hair.
What Are Box Braids?
Box braids are individual braids created by sectioning the hair into square or rectangular boxes and braiding each section from root to tip using extension hair. The extension hair is attached at the root with a knot and then braided into the natural hair all the way to the end.
The result is a style made up of dozens of individual braids that hang freely. They can be any length, any thickness, and any colour depending on the extension hair used. A small box means small, thin braids. A large box means thick, jumbo braids. The size you choose determines the look, the installation time, and how long the style lasts.
Box braids are called a protective style because the natural hair is tucked inside the braid where it is shielded from daily manipulation, the elements, and friction. This protection gives your natural hair a chance to grow and retain length while you wear the style.
A Brief History of Box Braids
Box braids have roots in African culture going back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence of individual braiding techniques has been found across multiple African civilisations, including ancient Egypt where braided styles have been documented on preserved remains dating back over 3,000 years. In West African cultures, individual braids were worn by men, women, and children as everyday and ceremonial hairstyles, with the specific pattern and size sometimes carrying cultural or social meaning.
In the modern era, box braids became a mainstream global style during the 1990s when they were embraced by Black women in the United States as a celebration of African heritage and natural beauty. Since then they have become one of the most universally recognised and loved protective styles in the world. In Nigeria they are a daily staple worn by women of all ages.
Box Braid Sizes: Which Is Right for You?
Micro Box Braids
Micro braids are very thin, made from tiny sections of hair. They look extremely detailed and can be styled in many different ways. The downside is installation time: a full head of micro braids can take eight hours or more. They are best for women who want a delicate, high-detail look and are willing to invest the time in installation.
Small to Medium Box Braids
This is the most popular size range in Nigeria. Small to medium braids give you the classic box braid look that photographs beautifully, holds well, and can be installed in four to six hours. They last well, suit most face shapes, and work in almost every setting from office to occasion.
Jumbo Box Braids
Jumbo braids use large sections and thick extension hair. They install the fastest of any size, often in two to three hours for a full head. They make a bold visual statement and suit women who want maximum impact with minimum installation time. The tradeoff is that they are heavier on the scalp, particularly at the hairline, and typically last a shorter time before the roots loosen.
Choosing the Right Braiding Hair
The braiding hair you use is the most important single decision in your box braid journey. It determines the texture, weight, frizz resistance, and longevity of the finished style. Cheap, untreated braiding hair frizzles within a week in Nigerian humidity, sheds excessively, and can cause scalp irritation. Quality braiding hair with treated fibre holds its finish, maintains its texture through weeks of Nigerian weather, and sits comfortably on the scalp.
The Supreme Braid 10X is the top braiding hair choice at Lush Hair Nigeria for box braids. The 10X bundle density means you get significantly more strands per pack, which produces fuller braids with less frizz from the very first day. The treated fibre maintains its smooth finish through heat and humidity far better than untreated alternatives. One pack covers a medium box braid install. Two packs are recommended for jumbo braids or extra-long installs.
The Wow Braid is a dependable everyday option that installs cleanly, holds its shape well, and is widely available for regular installs at an accessible price point.
For box braids in colour, the Lush Flavour Mix collection offers individually named and photographed shades from warm naturals like Honey and Cappuccino through to bold vivid options like Strawberry and Unicorn. Treated fibre, consistent colour from root to tip, and beautiful photographic results.

How to Prepare Your Hair Before Installation
The condition of your natural hair going into a box braid install determines how well the style holds and how healthy your hair is when it comes out. Do not install braids on dirty, dry, or tangled hair. That is the starting point for scalp problems and breakage during the weeks of wear.
Complete this preparation routine two to three days before your install appointment:
1. Wash thoroughly with Rejuvenating Shampoo 390ml. Clean hair means a clean scalp environment for the weeks ahead.
2. Deep Conditioner 500g for 30 minutes. The hair going into the braid needs to be as moisturised as possible because it will not receive product while it is braided.
3. Detangling Conditioner 370ml applied to wet hair. Detangle fully in sections from ends to roots before drying.
4. Leave In Treatment 500g applied section by section to damp hair. This is the moisture your natural hair will carry through the entire install.
5. Allow hair to fully dry before the appointment. Installing braids on damp hair invites mildew and scalp odour.
Two to three days before the appointment rather than the same day is deliberately recommended. Freshly washed natural hair can be slightly more difficult to braid smoothly. Hair that was washed a few days ago has settled and is at its most cooperative for installation.
What Happens During a Box Braid Installation
If this is your first box braid appointment, knowing what to expect makes the experience much more manageable.
The Process
6. The stylist sections the hair into boxes using a tail comb. The size of each box determines the size of each braid.
7. For each section, the extension hair is folded in half and looped around the natural hair at the root. A knot is created at the root to anchor the extension hair.
8. The natural hair and the two halves of the extension hair are braided together all the way to the end of the extension.
9. The end is sealed by briefly dipping into hot water or by applying a small amount of heat to prevent unravelling. Your stylist handles this step.
10. The process repeats for every section across the entire head.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Micro braids: six to ten hours. Small to medium braids: four to six hours. Jumbo braids: two to four hours. Bring something to do. A book, a podcast, or a downloaded show makes a long appointment much more comfortable.
Should It Hurt?
Some tension at the scalp during installation is normal, particularly at the hairline and nape where the hair is finer. Significant pain is not normal and is a sign the braids are being installed too tightly. If your scalp is burning or you can see the skin pulling at the root, tell your stylist immediately. Tight installation causes permanent edge thinning over time and is never worth a neater result.
How to Care for Box Braids
Installation is the beginning of the job, not the end. Box braids require consistent care during the weeks you wear them to keep the style looking good and to protect the natural hair underneath.
Scalp Oiling: Every 2 to 3 Days
Apply the Indian Herb Hair Growth 500ml directly to the scalp along each braid part using an applicator bottle. Massage gently for two to three minutes. This is the most important maintenance habit during a box braid install. A nourished scalp produces stronger hair, reduces itching, and supports growth throughout the weeks of wear.
In Nigerian summer heat, add the Mentholated Hair and Scalp Treatment 250ml alongside the growth oil. The menthol cools the scalp and controls the discomfort of heat and sweat buildup under tight braids.
Washing: Every 10 to 14 Days
Dilute the Mentholated Shampoo 390ml in an applicator bottle at roughly one part shampoo to three parts water. Apply directly to the scalp along each part, massage thoroughly, and rinse well. You do not need to remove the braids to wash. The diluted method cleans the scalp without disturbing the install. Pat dry gently and allow to air dry completely before applying scalp oil.
Moisturising the Braid Length
Lightly mist the braids with water every few days and apply a very small amount of Leave In Treatment 250g to the length. Smooth with your palms. This keeps the extension fibre from drying out in Nigerian heat and maintains the shine and finish of the style through the full install period.
Night Care
Sleep with a satin bonnet every single night without exception. Friction between the braids and a cotton pillowcase is one of the fastest ways to create frizz on the braid surface and loosen the roots ahead of schedule. A satin bonnet takes thirty seconds and adds weeks to your install.
How Long Do Box Braids Last?
Small to medium box braids installed with quality braiding hair and maintained with regular scalp washing and oiling last six to eight weeks. Jumbo braids last four to six weeks before the roots begin to loosen noticeably. Micro braids can last up to ten weeks when properly maintained.
Six weeks is the ideal sweet spot for most women. Long enough to get full value from the install, short enough that the roots have not become too knotted and tangled to remove cleanly.
Do not push past eight weeks regardless of how good the braids still look. By week eight, the new natural hair growth has begun to tangle with the extension hair at the root. Removal past this point becomes difficult and risks significant breakage.
How to Remove Box Braids Without Breaking Your Hair
Takedown is the step most likely to cause damage if rushed. Allow at least two to three hours for a thorough, patient removal.
11. Cut the braid below the knot at the root to reduce the length you are working with. Do not cut into your natural hair.
12. Unravel each braid from the bottom up, working slowly and stopping at any tangle rather than pulling through it.
13. Once the extension hair is removed from each section, apply a generous amount of conditioner to the natural hair in that section before moving to the next. This keeps each freed section from re-tangling while you work on the rest.
14. Once all braids are removed, apply Deep Conditioner 500g generously to all natural hair. Cover with a shower cap and leave for at least 30 minutes.
15. Detangle section by section under the deep conditioner using the Detangling Conditioner 370ml. Work from ends to roots in every section. Never start from the root.
16. Wash, rinse with cool water, apply leave-in, and allow to dry before assessing the hair and planning the next install.
Common Box Braid Mistakes to Avoid
- Installing on dirty or dry hair. Always wash and deep condition two to three days before.
- Going too tight at the scalp. Pain during installation is not normal and causes long-term hairline damage.
- Skipping scalp care during the install. The scalp needs oiling every two to three days and washing every ten to fourteen days even while the braids are in.
- Keeping braids in beyond eight weeks. The roots tangle with the extension hair and removal becomes a damaging and painful process.
- Rushing takedown. Pulling through tangles during removal snaps natural hair. Patient unravelling with conditioner at every section is the only safe approach.
- Sleeping without a satin bonnet. Friction causes surface frizz and root loosening that shortens the life of the install.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do box braids take to install?
Small to medium box braids take four to six hours. Jumbo braids take two to four hours. Micro braids take six to ten hours. Installation time depends on braid size, hair length, and the stylist's speed. Come prepared with something to occupy you during the appointment.
How many packs of hair do I need for box braids?
For small to medium box braids, one to two packs of the Supreme Braid 10X is typically enough for most hair lengths. For jumbo braids or extra-long installs, two to three packs. Buy one extra pack beyond your estimate. Running short of hair mid-install and having to match a new batch is one of the most frustrating problems in braiding.
How do I stop my box braids from frizzing?
Use quality treated braiding hair rather than untreated alternatives. Sleep with a satin bonnet every night. Avoid excessive product application to the braid surface, which attracts dust and accelerates frizz. Apply a light sealing product rather than heavy creams to the braid length. In Nigerian humidity, the surface of braids will develop some frizz after two to three weeks regardless of care. This is normal and does not mean the style has failed.
Can I wash my hair with box braids in?
Yes. You wash the scalp, not the braids. Dilute your shampoo in an applicator bottle and apply it directly to the scalp between the braid parts. Massage, rinse thoroughly, and allow to air dry completely. Wash every ten to fourteen days during the install.
How do I moisturise my scalp under box braids?
Apply the Indian Herb Hair Growth 500ml or the Mentholated Hair and Scalp Treatment 250ml directly to the scalp along each part using an applicator bottle every two to three days. Massage gently and allow to absorb.
Are box braids good for hair growth?
Box braids support hair growth indirectly by reducing breakage, not by directly stimulating the follicle. When the natural hair is tucked away in a braid and shielded from daily manipulation and the elements, the hair that grows from the follicle stays on your head rather than breaking off. This length retention over the six to eight weeks of the install creates visible growth when the braids come out.
